Constitutional Amendments

JMI is unwavering in its commitment to the Constitution of India. We do not seek to weaken or bypass it — we seek to strengthen it. The amendments we advocate are aimed at bringing India's founding document closer to its own highest ideals.

“JMI believes in Constitutionalism within Indian democracy. Our aim is to help build a fair and just society in the spirit of the Preamble of the Constitution of India.”

Our Commitment to the Constitution

The Indian Constitution is the supreme law of the land — the foundational contract between citizens and the state. It establishes governance structures, safeguards individual rights, and upholds the rule of law. JMI is committed to ensuring that government authority remains bounded and controlled by the principles and provisions already delineated within it.

Where we advocate for amendments, we do so through democratic means — lawful advocacy, civic engagement, and popular mandate. We do not promote shortcuts around the Constitution. We promote its deepening.

Towards Participatory Democracy

India is a liberal democracy — citizens elect representatives who then govern. JMI believes this is not enough. We advocate for India's transformation into a participatory democracy, where citizens actively engage in decision-making between elections — not just on election day.

Specific Amendments JMI Advocates

🌿Recognise Environmental Justice in the PreambleThe Preamble promises JUSTICE — social, economic, and political. JMI advocates expanding this to include environmental justice, so that the ecological rights of citizens and nature are enshrined at the highest level of our constitutional order.
♻️Add Sustainability as a Core Constitutional ValueJMI advocates amending the Preamble to read "Sovereign Socialist Secular Sustainable Democratic Republic" — enshrining intergenerational responsibility alongside liberty, equality, and fraternity as a foundational principle of the Indian state.
🏘️Devolve Real Power to Local GovernmentsThe 73rd and 74th Amendments gave Panchayats and Municipalities constitutional status — but real power, funds, and functionaries have never followed. JMI advocates strengthening the three-tier system so that local governments are genuinely empowered, not merely constituted.
🗳️Reform the Voting SystemFirst-Past-The-Post elections produce governments that majority of voters did not choose. JMI supports constitutional reforms enabling fairer alternatives — Ranked Choice Voting, Rated Voting, or Proportional Representation — so that every vote counts and representation is equitable.
🏛️Institutionalise Citizens' AssembliesParticipatory democracy requires formal structures — not just elections every five years. JMI advocates constitutional provisions for citizens' assemblies and civic engagement bodies at the ward, constituency, and district level, giving citizens a direct role in governance.
⚖️Ensure Judicial Transparency and AccessJustice delayed is justice denied. JMI supports constitutional provisions mandating the transparent, independent, and accessible functioning of the judiciary — and simplifying citizens' access to judicial remedies so that constitutional rights are not just written but reachable.
