About JMI
A citizen-led movement in India that aims to educate, empower, encourage and engage Indian citizens to achieve a world of justice.
🎯 Vision
- Make India a progressive nation by making local communities just, resilient, inclusive, and sustainable.
- Educate and encourage citizens to fully realise their constitutional rights and responsibilities.
- Empower citizens in establishing local self-governance and well-being-based communities where the rights of humans, nature, and other species are protected.
🧭 Mission
- Initiate a discourse on systemic change through progressive, clean, and green politics where every citizen can participate in policy-making.
- Organise citizens around grassroots issues and launch campaigns to influence stakeholders in executing sustainable solutions.
The Four Es Strategy
Everything JMI does is built around four core actions.
Educate
Build awareness of constitutional rights, civic duties, and systemic injustice across communities — so every citizen knows what they are entitled to.
Empower
Give citizens tools, confidence, and platforms to act on their entitlements and hold government accountable.
Encourage
Inspire the shift from passive observer to active agent — in communities, in campaigns, and in elections.
Engage
Build sustained grassroots communities from Village/Ward level to the National Chapter through collective action.
Our Ideology
JMI believes in Constitutionalism within Indian democracy — challenging the status quo through social, economic, political, and environmental justice.
Holistic Justice
We work for justice across all four dimensions simultaneously — social, economic, political, and environmental. Change in one without the others is incomplete.
Constitutionalism
The Indian Constitution is the paramount law of the nation. Our work upholds the rule of law, individual rights, and the principle of bounded government authority.
Progressivism
We champion societal enhancement through constructive reform — elevating living standards, promoting equality, and expanding individual rights within the constitutional framework.
Democratic Decentralism
Decision-making must be distributed to local communities. We advocate for federalism, participatory governance, and equity at every level — from the Panchayat to Parliament.
🏛️ Our History
The Justice Movement of India was initiated on 15th August 2022 — India's 75th Independence Day. The date was not incidental. Our freedom fighters won independence from the British, but we are still not free from poverty, inequality, corruption, or the suppression of our own people. Freedom from these is our generation's project.
“Our Freedom fighters fought for independence from the British, we got independence but still are not free — we are not free from poverty, we are not free from the shackles of inequality, we are not free from corruption. Freedom from these struggles is our generation's project.”
We draw inspiration from the Justice Party of pre-independent Tamil Nadu — a pioneering political entity that championed social and political justice, fought caste-based discrimination, and worked to eradicate untouchability and empower all sections of society. JMI carries that legacy forward into a modern, national context.
⚖️ Two Roles, One Movement
JMI is envisioned as having two complementary roles within one broader movement ecosystem — neither complete without the other, and neither subordinate to the other.
The Social Role
Civil Society & Grassroots Action
This is the foundation of everything JMI does — building a robust, organised civil society at the grassroots level. Activists, environmentalists, educators, and subject experts contribute ideas, campaigns, and sustained pressure to ensure that elected representatives remain democratic, accountable and transparent in their actions. At its core, this work is about transforming passive citizens into active citizens — people who no longer simply observe governance from the sidelines, but who engage, question, and demand what is rightfully theirs. Chief among these is their tax money, which citizens are entitled to see channelled back into the public services, infrastructure, and welfare it was meant to fund. By organising at the grassroots level, JMI equips people with the awareness and collective voice needed to hold representatives accountable and reclaim ownership of the resources they have contributed.
- Education and awareness campaigns
- RTIs, PILs, and legal advocacy
- Grassroots organising from Ward to Nation
- Holding institutions and representatives to account
The Political Role
People's Representatives from the Movement
During each election cycle, the civil society nominates its own candidate — from among the people, not from above. A callout is issued at the constituency level; where multiple candidates emerge, a local debate and vote is held. The winner becomes the movement's official nominee, representing citizens rather than party machinery or money.
- Candidates chosen from within the grassroots
- Democratic selection through local debate and voting
- Representatives accountable to citizens, not parties
- Long-term leadership nurtured from the community
“JMI is not meant to be only about the next election — it is meant to be about the next generation.”
We also envision a JMI Umbrella — a broader ecosystem of engaged citizens fostering policy think tanks, student movements, and allied organisations that work towards common goals while strengthening the movement's collective impact.
Our Values
Not aspirations — commitments we hold each other to, under all circumstances.
👥 Who We Seek
We seek members who are selfless, passionate, and committed — people who are not for sale after winning elections, who care more about the next generation than the next election, and who understand leadership as service rather than a route to power, status, or wealth.
We seek people with the courage to challenge unethical political culture, the patience to stay committed over the long term, and the ability to connect people to a larger cause through inspiration — not manipulation. In that spirit, JMI members place the cause above personality and uphold unity that does not polarise people.
